What is Logistics?

Logistics is an aspect of organization science dealing with procurement, maintenance and transport of materials, facilities and people. It also overs the handling of the details of an operation.

We look at three major areas within the organization in terms of Logistics:

(A) Outbound Logistics: This deals with goods leaving an organization Site to other site or customers. Also known as Dispatch. This will include: Sales Orders, Vehicle Dispatch Schedules, Hauliers, Vehicles, Drivers, Exports, Picking Slips, Weigh-Bridges and Dispatch Schedules. Returns and Recalls can be included to

(B) Inbound Logistics: This deals with goods being delivered from supplier or arriving on site from other sites. This is also known as Receiving or Intake. This will include: Purchase Order, Deliver Notes, Grading, Imports, Hauliers, Vehicles, Drivers and Weigh-Bridges.

(C) Warehouse Management: This deals with the internal logistics of storing and moving stock around the organization site. This can including Stock Management logistics. This will include: Stock Movement, Stock Takes, Picking, Quarantining, Rejecting, On-Hold/Release controls, Stock on Hand, Stock Replenishment, LIFO/FIFO and Serialization.
